It’s Oscar season! Little can make this film buff happier. Nothing can keep me from that telecast – dreaming of actually being able to attend this wonderful film tradition. I can’t wait to find out which films will win the coveted honors. Here’s my predictions:
Makeup – The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey – that was some impressive makeup and I’d love to see The Hobbit have a win.
Production Design – Another tricky one. The art for Anna Karenina, Lincoln, and Les Mis was, I think the best. I’ll go with Anna Karenina to spread the wealth.
Costume Design – Anna Karenina
Visual Effects – Life of Pi – there has been a lot of talk about that tiger and the movie has to win something.
Sound Editing – Argo
Sound Mixing – Les Miserables
Original Song – “Skyfall” by Adele for Skyfall – It’s Adele, It’s Bond. The Academy should want to honor Bond in some way and this a respectable, plausible way to do so.
Original Score – Life of Pi, Lincoln, or Argo. I’m going to go with Williams’ Lincoln score.
Animated Short – Paperman. Have you seen it? It’s adorable. Disney did well.
Documentary Short – Inocente – It has been receiving a lot of positive press and what I’ve seen of this piece is really good. Plus she’s going to be there so I’d love to see this film win.
Live Action Short – Buzkashi Boys – good cinematography, story, and vision.
Best Editing – All of them deserve it. It will likely go to Argo.
Documentary Feature – Searching for Sugar Man
Foreign Film – Amour – it’s all the press can talk about.
Adapted Screenplay – Silver Linings Playbook
Original Screenplay – Zero Dark Thirty. It was a good screenplay to begin with and every Oscar Bigalow’s film wins is something I’ll be celebrating. Runner up – Moonrise Kingdom.
Cinematography – Janusz Kaminski and ‘Lincoln’ – If you need more reason past the brilliant angles and lighting, read David Mermelstein’s piece, Spielberg’s Eye, for the WSJ.
Animated Feature – Brave, I’ve already written about what I love in Brave. It is a different formula than what we have gotten in Disney Princess movies previously – A different recipe that was cooked up by the brilliant Brenda Chapman. This woman deserves more honors.
Actor In a Supporting Role – This one is a hard one. I’m torn between Alan Arkin for Argo, Tommy Lee Jones for Lincoln, and Robert de Niro for Silver Linings Playbook. Any one of them could win and I would be a very happy woman as each of them deserve to win. They gave wonderful performances in fantastic movies. Since I have to pick one though, I’m going to go with Tommy Lee Jones for Lincoln. His portrayal of Stevens was top-notch and I think the Academy is looking for awards to give Lincoln.
Actress in a Supporting Role – Either Sally Field for Lincoln or Anne Hathaway for Les Miserable. I’m going to break the rules here because I really, really cannot choose. Both were incredible. Sally Field is a stronger, more distinguished actress but the Academy may be looking for something to give Les Mis.
Best Actor – Daniel Day Lewis – Lincoln. Hands down.
Best Actress – Jenifer Lawrence – Silver Linings Playbook. This is her breakout role. Lawrence was absolutely fantastic and she’s earned quite a few awards for the role already. If Lawrence doesn’t win I’ll be incredibly shocked and disappointed.
Best Director – I have honestly no idea though I’m leaning toward Spielberg for Lincoln.
Best Picture – It’s a horse-race between Argo, Lincoln, Silver Linings Playbook, Zero Dark Thirty, and Beasts of the Southern Wild. It would be marvelous if Silver Linings Playbook won and I think it might be able to pull it off. I really think this film was the best of the season. Though that may be wishful thinking.
